Grand Eastern Mercantile Company On-Line is very proud to present this excellent history of White County, GA, written by a “native son” who has a keen appreciation for the spirit of his people, their culture and their heritage.Mr. Baker writes with the discipline and focus of a scholar but his style conveys all the warmth and humor that endears his work to all.

Mr. Baker has served the people for nearly 23 years as Probate Judge of White County and, as such, he is acutely mindful of the accuracy and documentation needed to develop a useful history. Copious footnotes and an abundant bibliography attest to the thoroughness of his research. 119 photographs illustrate the 541 pages of fact-filled text. The reader’s convenience is well served by a detailed 11-page index.

Of enormous value to researchers are the eight appendices, including: -A: Historical Timeline for White County -B: The Legislative Act creating White County -C: Historical Population Profile of White County -D: County Officers of White County -E: Original Sale of Town Lots in Cleveland -F: Qualified Voters of White County Under The Reconstruction Act of 1867. -G: Early Marriage Records of White County. -H: Index to Early Wills of White County.

Much to the delight of genealogists, Appendix G is a 99-page section listing all marriage records from 1857 (when the county was established) through 1919, crossreferenced alphabetically both by husband’s and wife’s surname. Also listed are the dates of marriage and the record book and page number. Appendix H, also a boon to genealogists, is a five-page index listing the names of those individuals whose wills were probated and recorded from 1857 to 1960. Each listing includes the individual’s name, the date the will was executed and the book and page where the will is found.

No family library in North Georgia is complete without this well-written history!
